“In the future we will not
have time for leisure activities In the future we will only ‘work’ one day a week In the future our bodies will be shriveled up but healthy and our brains will be bigger In the future no one will be able to afford T.V. or newspaper resulting in no one knowing what’s going on” David Byrne In the Future (excerpt) |
Created as a tribute to the 70 years of
existence of Domus magazine, this piece looks back over seven decades of
architecture and interior design. Combining a cast of over 40 performers
with hundreds of pieces of furniture and interior design, many of them
originals and actual museum pieces, Robert Wilson creates a visual banquet
for the audience. Beginning in 1928, the piece is divided into seven scenes, one for each decade finishing with 1989 – 1998. Using video projections of the architecture of the decade, the most significant furniture and design elements of the period, text by various architects and designers, lights, sound, performers in fantastic costumes designed by Jacques Reynaud who often represent some of the giants of the field – Gio Ponti, Mollina, Ray and Charles Eames, Mr. Wilson gives a visual summary of each decade that at the same time achieves a humanity and lightness of touch that keeps it from becoming academic. |
