The Carlo Colla e Figli Atelier was established in 1994 to provide a fixed venue for the Milanese activity of the Carlo Colla e Figli Marionette Company, which had already been established at the Teatro Gerolamo in Milan from 1906 to 1957, and is managed by the Associazione Grupporiani (an organisation set up in 1984 and which has since then been responsible for all the production, promotion and distribution activities of the Carlo Colla e Figli shows). In these two decades, the Atelier has been characterised by its double value, namely that of being the place that hosts, for about three months of the year, the Milanese season of the Compagnia Colla, but also the site of the company's historical archives and craft workshops.
